Whitewater Rafting

We've driven many miles together fighting for clean water.  It's time to take a break and enjoy what we have fought so hard for.  On Saturday, June 8 we are holding a fundraiser for the Bus for Progress, and an opportunity to spend the day whitewater rafting through the beautiful Lehigh Gorge State Park in Pennsylvania!

On the morning of June 8th, the Army Corps of Engineers will begin releasing water from an upstream dam.  And we'll be there to raft the 13 mile stretch of the Lower Lehigh Gorge through class II and III rapids (with names like Bridal Veil, Mile long and Pipeline).  Though the names sound scary, and some technical paddling is necessary, Class II and III rapids are more fun than they are dangerous.  Beginner rafters are welcome.  Children must be at least 8 years of age.  Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  On the river, we'll be escorted by professional river guides on kayaks.

The scenery is spectacular and we might catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring overhead or other wildlife grazing along the river banks. You can see a YouTube video of what rafting down the Lehigh looks like.

The Bus for Progress will be departing from Jackson at approximately 8:15 AM, making the following stops:
  • 8:45 AM at the Home Depot parking lot on Route 130 (Southbound side) in Robbinsville, just south of I-195. Park your car at the corner of the parking lot near the entrance and highway.
  • 9:00 AM at the Trenton train station for folks interested in joining us from Washington, Philly or NYC.
Our rafting trip departs from our outfitter's lodge at 11:30 AM.  You are welcome to bring your own lunch, or purchase a box lunch from the outfitter (not included).

We'll spend about 5 hours on the river returning to the lodge at around 6 PM.  We'll then do dinner at the lodge, or stop at a restaurant on the way home.  We should return to Jackson before 10 PM.

We'll raft rain or shine.  Rain just means bigger rapids!  Wet suits are available to rent if the weather is cool.  Bare feet and sandals are not allowed - everyone must have water shoes.

There are only four dam release dates in June - and they are very popular!  We were fortunate to secure 24 spaces before our trip sold out!   The cost of our whitewater adventure is a very reasonable $88 per person, or $84 if you have a "Driver" membership (click here for more info). For children 15 and younger - $66. Each of our 24 spaces will be reserved on a first-come basis.  To reserve yours, please send a $88 via PayPal, or mail a check (payable to Bus for Progress) to Kathy Maher, 1201 Evergreen Avenue, Ocean, NJ 07712.  If you have already submitted $44, then only $44 ($40 for Bus Driver members) is due.  ALL PAYMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY MAY 17th!  Due to the outfitter's return policies, cancellations made after May 17 will only receive partial refunds.

Join us for a very fun day of rafting in a beautiful part of Pennsylvania.  We've taken care of all the details - your job is to simply hop on the bus and enjoy yourself!  And of course, we'll remind ourselves of the importance of protecting our water and forest resources.
